Every successful garment starts with the right fabric. Before you finalise a design, it helps to evaluate fabric systematically — not just by how it looks on a screen, but by how it behaves on the body and in production.

1. Define the end use

Who is the customer? Where and how long will the garment be worn? A cocktail saree, a haldi kurta set and a winter bridal lehenga have very different needs.

2. Check drape and hand-feel

Hold the fabric up and let it fall. Does it flow, hold shape or float? Feel the surface: is it soft against the skin, crisp, textured or slippery? Drape and hand-feel are difficult to judge from images, which is why physical samples matter.

3. Consider weight and comfort

Heavier embellished fabrics add richness but may be tiring to wear for long events. Balance statement panels with lighter areas, and consider linings carefully.

4. Assess transparency

Sheer fabrics such as organza, net and tissue need suitable linings or layering. Check how the fabric looks over skin tones and lining colours.

5. Review colour in different light

Metallics, sequins and silks shift between daylight and indoor lighting. View samples in both before approving.

6. Think about construction

Some fabrics fray easily, some are delicate to press, and embellished fabrics may need careful cutting around motifs. Discuss placement and wastage with your pattern maker.

7. Confirm specifications in writing

Ask for width, composition, care guidance and lead time to be confirmed with your quotation, and keep an approved reference sample for production.

8. Plan for repeat orders

If the design might become a bestseller, discuss repeatability, colour consistency and future quantities early.
