Which fabrics work best for which garments? A quick reference for designers planning their next collection.

Matching fabric to garment is one of the most important decisions in a collection. The same embroidery can look completely different on organza versus velvet — and the same silhouette can feel effortless or stiff depending on the base. Here is a quick reference.

Sarees

Sarees need drape and fall. Look at georgette, chinon, soft silks and lightweight zari weaves. Embroidered borders and scattered butis keep the saree easy to drape, while woven pallus add drama.

Lehengas

Lehenga skirts need volume and structure. Velvet, brocade, raw-silk textures and embroidered nets layered over a supportive base work well. Heavier embroidery can be concentrated near the hem.

Kurtas and kurta sets

Kurtas balance comfort with polish. Chanderi, tissue, crepe and lightweight jacquards are versatile choices. Tissue kurta sets with zardozi necklines remain a festive favourite.

Dupattas

Dupattas should be light enough to drape and pin: organza, net, tissue and chiffon-like georgettes, often with embellished borders.

Gowns and drapes

Gowns and contemporary drapes suit sequin georgettes, soft nets and fluid chinons. Consider stretch-free bases and good linings.

Jackets, bandhgalas and menswear

Structured silhouettes call for jacquards, brocades and textured silks that hold shape and tailor crisply.

Blouses

Blouses often carry the most detailed work. Choose a stable base that supports embroidery and fits closely without puckering.

Coordinating fabrics

Many collections pair a statement fabric with a plain coordinate — for example, an embroidered net with a matching plain base for the lining or sleeves. When developing a collection, ask about coordinating bases in the same colour family.
